Newsletter #1 2016/2017

Welcome to the 2016/2017 Season

First of all, welcome to the 2016/2017 summer season. The season is due to kick off this weekend even though there has been quite a sting in the tail of winter. Hopefully the weather plays its part and we get to see some early season cricket played despite the rain which has no doubt set a lot of the September track preparation work back a few weeks.

In this month’s newsletter:

  • Premiers announce new captain
  • Draws for this weekend
  • Cancellations
  • Tom Latham in India
  • Burnside pavilion update
  • Junior trials this weekend
  • Notice for artificial wicket games
  • Al Brown competition kicks off

Premiers announce new captain

screen-shot-2016-09-29-at-10-19-16-pm

We would like to welcome and congratulate Cam Hawkins on being appointed to lead the BWCUCC Premiers this season. Cam fills the role vacated by Sam Noster who has moved to Wellington. Cam transferred to the club this year from Marist-Harewood and was the winner of the sportsmanship trophy for Batting at the CMC end of season prizegiving in 2015/2016. Welcome Cam and best of luck for the summer ahead.

Draws for this weekend:

Burnside Premiers kick-off their season with a two-day match that will be played at home against Riccarton CC. Good luck to all the Burnside teams starting their season this weekend.

You will be able follow the Premiers live on CricHQ. Check the BWCUCC Facebook page for the links and updates on game day.

Cancellations:

Game-day cancellations will be available through Newstalk ZB 1098, on the CMC website, through the CMC phone service, and the CMC Facebook page. The free TXT service for cancellations is no longer in use.

Tom Latham in action in India:

Cricket- India and New Zealand 1st Test Day 4
Ravindra Jadeja of India celebrates the wicket of Tom Latham of New Zealand during day 4 of the first test match between India and New Zealand held at the Green Park stadium on the 25th September 2016. Photo by: Deepak Malik/ BCCI/ SPORTZPICS

It was a tough introduction to test cricket in India for BWCUCC’s Tom Latham, with the Black Caps going down by 197 runs in the first test at Kanpur.  Latham fell LBW in both innings to Ashwin, who showed his class throughout the match, taking 10 wickets for the test. A hard-earned 58 in the first innings gave Latham his 8th test match 50. While it wasn’t the result the Black Caps were after, it was mesmerising to watch, and we look forward to watching Tom back in action in the second test starting on the 30th.

 Burnside Pavilion update

There have been a few recent changes at the pavilion, notably the new deck. In the last couple of weeks, the balcony decking was completely overhauled with new decking and considerable strengthening work done, and it is looking great. There are just a few finishing touches and a coat of stain to go down. A special thank you goes to Rhys Barron from the Burnside Presidents Foxes, and also to his cast of willing helpers. If you see Rhys or any of the team involved, don’t forget to shout them a beer.

screen-shot-2016-09-29-at-10-16-35-pm

Make sure you come down after the day’s play to share a drink and a yarn at the pavilion. This summer, the club replaced the aging crimson furniture with a more modern look courtesy of Turner’s Auctions and plenty more seating. We all look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Junior Trials for Year 7 and 8’s

Junior Year 7 and Year 8 Trials are taking place this Sunday (2nd of October) from 11am to 1pm, at the artificial nets at Burnside Park. Please note that you are not to wear spikes on the artificial wicket. Contact Peter Burke if you have any questions, and keep an eye on the club’s Facebook page for any cancellations or updates.

Notice for artificial wicket games

All the artificial pitches were “re-turfed” towards the end of last season. Any teams that are drawn to play on artificial pitches will each need to supply a set (one unit) of spring-loaded stumps. Only rubber soled sports shoes can be worn on these surfaces.

Al Brown MVP Competition Kicks Off

Have you ever wondered how Al Brown MVP points are calculated? We use the CricHQ MVP system, which uses a very complex process that takes into account each individual match scenario to calculate points for batting, bowling and fielding. You can read-up on the points system on the CricHQ support site here.

This is the first week of competition, and all results from all grades will contribute towards the Al Brown MVP award at the end of the season. Make sure your results get into CricHQ as soon as possible after your matches end, and take care to capture all fielding performances too (catches, stumpings, run outs), as almost everything goes into the mix for MVP points.

Enjoy your cricket and have a great weekend!

Newsletter May 2016

Winter has arrived already and the with colder weather really arriving in the last couple of weeks, in fact this May has been so warm that Regan our groundsman has even had to do some watering on the blocks to help with the autumn renovation work. He even cut the grass growth off the blocks again, which at least should make the task easier come spring.

What’s been happening behind the scenes? We recieved some great feedback from our online survey and while it was just shy of 50 respondents – there was a good deal of well thought out suggestions as well as some confirmation on the areas at the club where we need to focus our energy & as well as some re-assurance we are doing things right. Some of the activities this winter and in no particular order;

Peter Burke and Dan Vedder are working on both fundraising and sponsorship for both cricket and club renovation activities

We are working on quoting and arranging funding for the replacement the artificial grass practice wickets as well as some repairs to the surrounding nets of these practice wickets.

We have working on some options and costs for replacement of deck covering and some other work to the deck.

We received some strong feedback that while our facilities are ‘average’ for a cricket club, and they could certainly do we with some improvements!

Thanks for the feedback on the communication and updates that appreciate. It will be great to share some of the history of the club online which will continue to be a work in progress. There was lot of feedback that there should be more social activities that are shared across teams the club – please share any ideas that you get with us!

How could you help?

If you are a tradie and might be able to assist in some way with the deck or any work to the club house – please register your interest by contacting shane.young72@gmail.com

Be ready for action – we expect to be having some very important working bees coming up in the mont or so and your help will be invaluable.

Send in an idea and please keep the feedback and comments coming in!

Telegram from the UK

As much as we love following the successes of Tom Latham on tour, we were wrapt to get this update from premier mens player Angus Harman

“Dear Shane, I am living in Carlisle a town about the size of Christchurch. Im staying with a player and his mum who spoils me a lot. The club is similar to the snake pit with a strong wind. The thing I miss the most is the sun, as its been pretty cold but its on the improve, slowly. My new favourite food is mars bar milk. Havent quite found love yet but trust me ive been trying real bwc style. If bussy was living here he would impliment a flag system and install a fish and chips store on the corner of the main street called cutts road as it hasnt got one . Ive spent a lot of money tasting english beers but is a necessity to fit in…. I nunped on the Leicester city bamdwagon and cheered them on at Old trafford”

Clearly this was sent in prior Leicester city winning the EFL so one can only imagine how much fun he had! Gus seems to have cemented a place at number 3 and a link to his clubs facebook page is Wigton Cricket Club

How about becoming an umpire?

Senior Prizegiving

This years senior prizegiving was held the club rooms and was well represented form the senior teams and master of ceremonies Dave “Crash” Robertson accompanied by Doug Allcock did an excellent job in the presentation accompanied by a short speech by the team captains. Matt Farrant – Winner Al Brown Best All Round Performance, AJ Hintz Trophy for best bowling performance in a match, Jubilee Cup most wickets in a match, Best Bowler – Premier Men, and MVP Premier Men.   Matt is holding a ball once used by Dan Reese in a pre-war match for Canterbury against Otago

As you can see Matt Farrant has had a superb season both with the bat and ball, he has deserved place on the Honour’s Board at the club – it will be another Farrant to add to the list of great cricketer’s.  For a full list of club winners please click on this link –  Prizewinners 2015 and 2016

Alex Reese – leaving us a coach

Burnside bids farewell to premier coach Alex Reese, who is going overseas on his ‘OE’ in winter of this year.  After several years as premier coach Alex has installed a great culture in the premier team and very nearly took the team to victory in the two day competition this year.  Alex has also been instrumental in assisting with junior coaching and the Club’s other senior teams.   Alex will certainly be missed by the Burnside community and we thank Alex for the service he has given to the Club both as a player and a coach.  Nevertheless, we are sure that he will come home to Burnside upon his return to New Zealand.  The Club is now recruiting for a new premier coach and will announce that appointment in the coming months.

AJ Hintz Memorial Game

A match was held on the Sunday following prizegiving in the memory of Andrew. It was a superb day of cricket and every emotional for all involved. A lot of memories of “Reg” were shared – thanks to those who organised the event and to Melissa and Graeme White for sharing their photos of the day.

Newsletter 20, 2015/2016

What a privilege it was to have able to have Blackcap Tom Latham attend our Junior Prizegiving last Sunday and help award the prizes to the players – the juniors were almost as excited as the adults.  You could really see the ‘capturing that love of the game that you had as a kid growing up’ philosophy which Tom explained was something the Blackcaps strive for in their approach to playing cricket

When Tom mentioned how he remembered sitting on the floor of the clubrooms for his junior prizegiving, it just reminded everyone that you can make your dreams come true. Some members of the club were very lucky to be presented with some of Tom personal BlackCaps gear, and the club has received a Test Shirt and ODI shirt which will be mounted in the club. Tom also signed a heap of autographs and got asked for plenty of photos and managed to survive a couple of questions from the audience. Thanks Tom Latham for making yourself available for the club  – we are so proud of you.

Tom is off to Kent, to play in the English County Championship and we wish him every success.

Murray Hawes was presented with the Junior Merit Award for his work with Juniors for the season – Murray was a bit disappointed he couldn’t take the silverware with him, but we will be getting something for his mantle piece this Saturday – Well done Murray for all your hard work.

Thanks also to Glyn from m4photography who, in addition to doing the team photos at short notice, stayed and provided the club with some great pictures of the prizegiving. The premier team also came to see the junior prizegiving and Angus reminded them on how the whole club looked up to them.  We are all very grateful for the efforts that the Parents, Coaches, Ground Staff and especially the hours of work that Peter Burke has put into to organising junior cricket at BWCUCC.

Senior Prizegiving

Senior Prizegiving is the Saturday the 19th March at Burnside Cricket Club from 7pm. The club will be provide some pizza and snacks, but it may pay to eat first!

Uber has decided that they would provide free transport for the event, so no excuses in getting to and from the venue!

Senior Cricket

The Premier team were invited to bat by Sydenham who made the best of the conditions bowling BWCUCC all out for 115. Gus Harman who opened with 44 and Liam Winn 39 put up the resistance. Sydenham reached 249/8 declared with Scott Inglis the pick of the bowlers with 16.4 overs 5 maidens 3/51. Both teams are conscious that an outright win is what’s needed to be assured of winning the competition.

2a’s are in command with their game at Sydenham Park, having batted first to get 136 they had Sydenham all out for 63 with Alex McDuff getting 8/36 from his 14 overs on the trot. BWC currently has a lead of 174 with 6 wickets in hand.

Alex McDuff – 8 Wickets for 2a vs Sydenham

The mighty Whangaparoa Cannons Pony Club proved too powerful for the BWCUCC 3a men wrapping the match earlier than expected, with Chris Peters producing 4/22 off his 4.4 overs.

Both the Brawlers and Mariners were not able to produce winning matches this week and will be looking to get back in the winning column for the last match of the season. Vishal from the Brawlers has cracked 500 runs for the season and it looks like the afternoon batting award is between him and Marty Conway of the Foxes, both of whom are playing at Burnside on Saturday.

The President’s Fox were able to secure another win at the weekend over Sydenham Cardinals as the silver fox, Chris Kennedy top scored with a classy 63 not out! The Foxes came second in the main round robin, but are the top of the top 4 split and are playing this weekend to win that part of the competition.

The Dubai Diamond Traders have produced another with with a well polished performance against Sydenham.

A.J Hintz Memorial Match

Hamish Kember, and fellow BWC members are playing in a memorial match for Andrew Hintz this Sunday the 20th, Starting at 1pm. Come down for a bit of a look and a bit of a catch up with some of great names of the club playing – Hawker, Bateman, Jeffery, Haglund, Philpott, Everest etc, etc will be taking the field. Junior Cricket

Only two more weeks to go of Junior Cricket left, with Saturday Morning Cricket finishing up on the 19th of March, and the last Friday night of superstar academy is on the 18th of March – so let’s make the most of it. It was great to see the junior players pay their respects to Martin Crowe last Saturday with a minutes silence. Here the BWU9 team line up to pay their respects.

BWU9 1 Minute Silence

We have had many of our junior on to representative honour’s and its the same this weekend with CJCA fixtures taking place – please continue to proudly represent your club and it will be great to see you at Prizegiving.

If you have found a digital casio watch around the nets please hand it into the club.

Senior Cricket

The Premier Men managed to clean up East Shirley last week with a great spell of bowling from Matt Farrant who got 6/50. Both Matt and Scott Inglis picked up 8 wickets for the match – This week we welcome grade leaders Sydenham to Burnside Park  for the first day of the last 2 day match of the season. It will be a must win for BWCUCC – you can read this article to explain the position of the grade last round – The Press

Matt Farrant 6_50 against East Shirley

Matt Farrant, 6/50, leader of the club’s Al Brown MVP points award

The 2a’s are leading the competition 111.49 to Saint Alban’s 111.22, going into the last round the draw has BWCUCC vs Sydenham at Sydenham Park #1 and St. Alban’s playing Riccarton at Bradford Park.  BWCUCC has not won the second grade competition since 2009/2010 season when they were lead by Ashley Taggart. Let’s hope that a match off has left the lads rested.

Not a great day at the office for either team in the 3a Grade, not even a 5 wicket hall from Umesh in the Brawlers could help them win against Marist-Harewood and the Mariners had tough day at the office as well.

The President’s Foxes had a good win against East Shirley as Marty Conway scored 53, putting them in semi-final this weekend in the top four play off. The Dubai Diamond Traders, Ghetto Hustlers and Rolling Stones all had T20 wins – and the Strikers falling short with not enough runs or players this week.

How can we improve?

We have put together a small survey monkey survey for you provide some feedback on how you rate the club, it will help make sure we are providing the best experience we can please take the time to complete our survey on the link below;

The club would like to thank Paul Shackleton who this year has provided the club with digital design services as well as donating the gate entry sign and signage above the entry. Every week we have been asking him for a copy of his company logo and contact details we can pass on – they have not been forthcoming, so when you see Paul about the club just say thanks. Paul Shackleton – regretting the decision to go “hot”

Newsletter 18, 2015/2016

It was very sad news yesterday to hear of the death of Martin Crowe, especially as we so recently lost our mate Andrew Hintz at a similar age, and both to Cancer. A whole generation of players grew wanting to be able to bat like Marty, with all the timing and the classical shots. Rest in Peace Marty.

A big thank you to all the people that came out too support our club during club day – it great to see so many kids enjoying cricket! There plenty of pictures up on our Facebook page.

Peter Burke – Awarded the Sir Jack Newman Award for Community Cricket

Peter had managed to keep this entire event a secret to everyone and it was only our eagle eyed Premeir Mens skipper who saw Peter name in the NZ Cricket awards list that drew out attention to the fact he slipped to Auckland to attend the function and be presented this great award. Peter has worked tirelessly for 30 years in community, and especially junior cricket and was deserving recipient. It was great to have him back on Friday night to help organise the cricket as well club day the next day.

Junior Cricket

Thanks to all the Coaches, Managers, Scorer’s and Parent’s for supporting all our SuperStar junior players – their skills have improved out of sights in all departments since October so you guys are all doing a great job!

The Premier Men passed on a message of thanks to all the support they had from the Juniors, and especially the High 5s as they ran around the oval on their warm-up! Thanks guys.

Angus who coaches the Year 7/8 Girls writes in:

“After winning the toss, the girls batted first on a lovely Burnside Oval Number Three pitch, posting 179/3 from their 26 overs. This was a great all-around team performance with four partnerships over 20 runs, including 54 runs from openers Joey Hull and Bethany Fox to the ‘first retirement’.
The girls bowled the OBC Red team out for 135 in 22.5 overs. This included a double wicket maiden over from the in-swinging left-arm pace of Bethany Fox while Men’s Premier coach Alex Reese was watching. Alex was told Beth wouldn’t be available for the Premiers just yet, or at least a rather large transfer fee would be required!
There were a number of pieces of high quality fielding, including four run-outs completed by Alysia Ono, Abby McKissock, Hannah McKay, Eliza McIntosh and keeper Joey Hull.  Abby McKissock also took a very sharp catch to complete a great caught & bowled.
This win meant the girls captured the coveted Haidee Tiffen Shield, named after the current White Ferns coach, and competed for “Ranfurly Shield’ style amongst girls y7/8 teams. Also, apparently the only Mexican Wave seen on Burnside Park this Club Day was induced by the girls’ batting!
Thanks very much to those, including the groundsman, who made it possible for the girls to play on Number Three, and special congratulations to Peter Burke on his NZ Cricket Award.”
Blake Coburn – Canterbury “A” – Tour of Australia
Our Premier Men player Blake Coburn writes in about his experience on tour on Australia with the Canterbury “A” side – thanks Blake and well done for making the side
“The tour was an amazing experience for all us lads that went. Not only on the field but off it as well. Got the chance to verse a quality opposition at quality venues like Blacktown international sport complex, Bankstown oval and Hurstville oval. Played alot of cricket on the trip including one 2 day game in which we won on first innings, against NSW Country. One 3 day game against NSW 2nd XI. Two 2020s against the Sydney Thunder Academy and Sydney Sixers Academy and then finished off with a one day game against NSW 2nd XI. There were many highlights and plenty of challenges like chasing leather in 41 degree heat which i cant say was to fun, sweated in places that i haven’t sweat in before. .. None the less was a great tour and feel like I have come out a better person and player because of it.”

Senior Cricket
Premier Men have got the First Innings points over East Shirley have a lead of 84 heading into the second day – honours go to Scott Inglis with a 6 wicket bag bowling in tandem with Matt Farrant as we bowled first to have ES all out for 107. BWC set up 234 in reply with Sam Noster 68 and Matt Parker 69 featuring in a strong partnership to get quick runs. BWC need a win to keeps hopes alive of winning the competition.
2a’s were dissappointed to have been defaulted to in a two day fixture, and were accordingly assigned domestic duties…they will be fizzing to get back out to the middle.
The 3a Team team had an impressive win against Halswell, and it looked the Brawlers had a early shower in a match that only saw 61 runs scored.
The Foxes were too good for Hornby at home, it was very generous of the Hornby boys to switch venue to Burnside Park due to club day – a match played in great spririts.
The Ghetto Hustlers had a good win over St. Albans, with the rest of the sides not getting across the line – the Dubai Diamond Traders now have 2 loses for the session, both to the same side.
Keep up the good work guys, on a few weeks of the season left before the long winter.
In other news;

David Fox – In the paper

David Fox, a long time club member and supporter managed to get published in The Press in support of Hagley Oval. It’s a timely reminder that without the efforts many people like David who took the time to attend and present at the Environment Court hearings and the support of the Mayor at the time there would have been a slim chance of having such a beautiful cricket asset in Christchurch.

I understand that when the club finally decided to move to Burnside Park, David Fox, who is surveyor, and some helpers spent the weekend at the park with a Theodolite laying out the grounds and levels of the oval for the Waimairi District Council. How good did Hagley Oval look the 2nd Test against Australia! Plenty of members were in attendance to see the final test for Brendon McCullum and we were priviliged to see his record test ton in the first innings, it was something special.

You may have noticed at Hagley Oval the Canterbury Cricket Umpires Association Pavilion looking superb after the refurbishment for the World Cup, this Pavillion was the home of the West Christchurch Cricket Club from 1905 until the move to Burnside – you can read more about the history of the pavilion here CRCUA website

Cricket is back on for this week and you can check out the Draw for this weekend

Club Day this Saturday 27th of February

There are lot of Saturday junior teams playing at Burnside Park and surrounds this Saturday and we hope you can come back to the club after your matches, get stuck into the Sausage Sizzle, watch the Premier Men who are playing at home and tell us all about the test, if you were lucky enough to get there!

As I mentioned last week, it will also give some of the members who played with Andrew Hintz a chance to have a bit of yarn about Andrew during the Premier team at their Lunch interval and during the afternoon.

Andrew Hintz Memorial Game – Sunday 20th of March

Hamish Kember is doing a great job organising this match, it will kick off at 1pm on the Sunday the 20th, if you are interested in getting on the field have a chat with Hamish, or email into the club and we will pass it on.

Paul Black – Dream DJ job

Many of you may have seen Paul Black mixing the decks and singing in local bars and restaurants such as the Little Brown Jug, Harewood Tavern and The Rose and Thistle – well this week he landed a top job with New Zealand and Australian Cricket team after party. To say Blackie was pretty excited would be an understatement. Here are a couple of pictures to give you taste and if you need to book any entertainment you can get hold of Paul Black on his facebook page https://www.facebook.com/blackies.entertainment/
