Newsletter 16, 2015/2016

Cricket is back in full swing with some great results for Premier Men and 2a’s both having outright win’s against St.Alban’s. The Dubai Diamond Traders winning the grade in the regular season and a Ton for the Red Barron – all took our mind of the test match in Wellington.

Friday Night Super Star Academy Cricket is ON for Friday night, 19th of Feb

There is NO cricket this week on Saturday 20th February due to the Test Match at Hagley Oval. Weather going to be great according to the forecast so let’s get plenty of support for the Blackcap’s, or club man Tom Latham and Brendon McCullums last test. If you are going to the test here are Hagley Oval updated terms and conditions here

Club Day – Saturday 27th of February –

The club is arranging another club day on Saturday the 27th of February at Burnside Oval. Its a good opportunity to get the Saturday Juniors to play at the club, while the Premier Men start the first day of their two match against East Shirley as 2 play 3.

It’s also going to be a good opportunity for the members of the club and have a get together and catch-up to remember Andrew Hintz. Hamish Kember is also in the process of arranging a cricket match to be played on the 20th of March against some of “Reggies” former team mates so if you have played cricket with Hintz and want a run please get in to contact with Hamish, or put your name forward by email to the club.

Let’s make a day of it at BWCUCC!

BWCUCC Presidents Foxes and Premier Men both paying their respects to Andrew Hintz before their matches on Saturday – both sides went on to win.

Junior Cricket

A win for BWU4 vs St Andrews college by 66 runs at Burnside Primary school , BWU3 went down to Sydenham by 40 runs – please let me know if there are any special mentions for the honours board or send some pictures in that would be great.

Last Friday was the first cricket back for the Super Star Academy players, and Peter Burke reports it was as full a session after the holiday as he has seen in recent years – and with couple new coaches to help out. The youngsters must have taught Liam Winn as think or two as he went on to score 55 for Premier Men against St. Albans. Let’s hope the warm evenings continue.

BWU9 – Year 7/8 Girls team news and CJCA representative news. Angus report that

“The girls had another great game last weekend despite turning up to find a sprinkler truck had just turned their pitch at Polo into a swimming pool. A quick trip to Tai Tapu saw the girls batting on a dry pitch in a lovely country setting. They scored an imposing 214/5 off their 26 overs with Joey Hull 30* off 30 balls and Eliza McIntosh 59* off 31 balls. In reply Tai Tapu were all out for 68 in 19 overs. This was a great all-round bowling effort with only 15 extras, their lowest for the season and a reflection of all the coaching work Dawn Prestige has done with the girls.”

This week the bowling efforts of Eliza McIntosh at the CJCA tournaments and the girls South Island tournament in January (where she was joint top wicket taker) were rewarded at the Metro Youth cricket awards with the CJCA’s Jubilee Bowling Cup. Well done Eliza – we think you are the first Burnside junior to get one of those Jubilee awards.

The Burnside girls are also well represented in the CJCA’s U14 girls team announced this week to contest a quadrangular 20/20 tournament in Auckland at Easter. Well done to Molly Dunlop, Eliza McIntosh and Joey Hull for making that team!

Eliza McIntosh CJCA Jubilee Bowling Cup

Eliza McIntosh with the CJCA Jubilee Bowling Cup

There is no doubt that the success of this side is down the determination of the girls to improve their cricket as well the enjoyment from playing the game as part of a team. The support and help of parents and coaches is also very important. Many of the girls would have played in mixed junior teams for the club, but were also involved in the very well run CJCA girls tournaments, if you have a daugther interested in playing cricket and want to discuss this with anyone Angus McIntosh and Mike Dunlop would be only to happy to share their experiences, just email in your query to the club and we can put you in touch.

CMC Cavaliers, T20 Grade Champions, Regular Season – Dubai Diamond Traders

Back Row – Left to Right – Angus Mckenzie, Gerard Pottinger, Guy Archibald, Sam Harrison, Luke Moore

Front Row – Left to Right – Phife the Dog, Alex Truesdale, Nick Tinning, Ranui Luke, Brook Skates and Nick Robins

Make sure you give these guys the praise the deserve, its a tough grade in Cavaliers grade and it came down the last round when they managed to bet Hornby for the points to win.

Premier Men had an excellent outright win against St. Albans played over the Saturday and Sunday last weekend are now second on the table with Sydenham on 84.83 points, BWC 74.7 and East Shirley 73.01 – The next round on the 27th will see BWCUCC at home to East Shirley. Great result, and down to the hard work done by all – mentioned in dispatches Angus Harman’s 72 in the first innings, and Liam Winn’s 55 and a great all round bowling unit. Matt Farrant starred with Bat and Ball to build a good lead in Al Brown

The 2a side give St. Albans some punishment with a win by an innings and  40 runs, I don’t have any details of individual perfomances.

Cannon’s (Footie Foote and Road Block in the runs) and Brawlers (Rob Hoysted and David O’Brien both scoring 50 odd not out) had wins at home at Burnside Park.

3a’s and the Mariners found the vindaloo dished up a bit too spicy and too hot to handle a tough day in the park for them. The Stikers, Ghetto Hustlers and Rolling Stones are back to the drawing board for their next matches.

President’s Foxes managed a comfortable win over the Sydenham Cardinal’s – by 170 odd runs – with Marty Conway scoring 58, but the star of the show Rhys “Red” Barron getting a hundred for the club – after being invited by the skipper to open the batting – and hammering 13 boundaries and three 6’s to get his 107 and a couple of catches. Frampton Shield survives it first defence and the skipper was pleased to handover the “Fail Bail” trophy played between both teams.

It was a very sad week for the club as we farewelled Andrew Hintz at his funeral service on Wednesday, it was very well attended with plenty of stories and tales. A date will be confirmed for a get together at the Club.

Angus reports

“A great performance by the girls this week against OBC gold on Sat. The girls put on 226/4 in 26 overs and then kept OBC to 158/6 in their 26 overs. Some great batting by our girls including a number of personal bests for the season. Bethany Fox scored 32* off 21 and Eliza McIntosh 51* off 39.  There was lots of great bowling, but I should mention Abby McKissock’s three overs, one wicket for three runs.”
BWU3 had a 40 run win over Sumner CC in which Oakley Hawes 40 and Sam Forster 42* making the honours board – well batted.
Please remember to send in any photos or match performances! The Honours Board has been updated which can be found here
Coach Education Service – Extra Cover Coaching
Our Premier Mens Coach, Alex Reese has started a Coach Education service in Christchurch with Keryn Ambler (CHCH Metro) and Matt Parr (CBHS) called Extra Cover Coaching.
They specialise in modular Coach Education sessions, focussing on the ‘how’ of coaching, rather than the ‘what’.
On Monday 15th February, they will be running a session on ‘Coaching and Understanding Youth Athletes’. This session will be run by Sports Psychologist, John Quinn.
John works with a number of professional sporting outfits and athletes including the Canterbury Kings, New Zealand Cricket, Canterbury Tactix and local Shot Putter, Tom Walsh.
This session will be held at 6pm, Monday 15th February at Christchurch Boys’ High Cricket Pavilion and costs $10.

The Premier is back at Burnside this weekend for their match against St.Albans who are third in the points table – leading by less than half a point over BWCUCC, so a good time to come down and support the side.

A special mention goes out to Blake Coburn who playing for Canterbury A this week against Auckland A took 6 wickets – well bowled!
Deon Cremer is back to scoring runs after a very quick 77, which as not enough to overcome a MPCC side playing at home against the Brawlers – better luck this week.
Presidents Foxes overcame OBC on Saturday with a 4 wicket win with some of the players returning to Burnside Oval on the Monday to play in the 2nd rep fixture of the grade where North vs South with 2 players from all the clubs represented. A great initiative for the spirit of Presidents Grade cricket

Andrew “Reggie”Hintz – RIP

It with sadness that we report Andrew has passed away.  The service is to be this Wednesday, with details to follow. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family.

“Reggie” earned his Canterbury cap in the mid 1980’s when Canterbury Cricket was particluarly strong, and his record for the club premier team spans from 1982-1998. He continued his involvement with the club and still managed to play Presidents grade and he never missed the masters tournament.

The service for Andrew is at Lamb and Haywood, Wairakei Road, 10am on Wednesday.

This Saturday Morning Junior Cricket is back in action – and not a moment too soon to give the kids a chance to play some cricket like some of their BlackCaps hero’s. It is great to have the Australian team touring NZ, and it’s even better to give them a hiding in the first ODI at Eden Park.

Friday Night Junior Cricket starts back on the 12th of February – so those inolved will need to wait another week!

Central Stags win Ford Trophy for 50 Over cricket

Central Stags Ford Trophy Winners 2015

;left to right – George Worker, Tom Bruce and William Young with the Ford Trophy

In last weekends final between Canterbury and Central Stags, Canterbury was beaten by the record equaling total of 405/6 at Pukekura Park. It was treat to recieve this photo on one our teams Facebook Page that with the title “BWC for life” with the three former BWCUCC players who featured in the match – George Worker’s 159 off 151 balls who opened the batting and was out in the 47th over, Tom Bruce who broke the record for the fastest 50 in NZ domestic one day history on his way to 71 off just 23 balls, and Will Young who captained the side and scored 51 off 32 balls. Congratulation to these guys – and thanks for thinking of us back at BWCUCC. You can read more about that match here

Senior Cricket

The Premier Men’s were not able to get any play of their first day encounter against Riccarton due to the pitch being unplayable – so it will be interesting to see what tactics come out on the second day at Upper Riccarton Domain.

2a’s continue against Riccarton at Burnside Park, joined with Presidents, Mariners and the Dubai Diamond Traders whose last over win last weekend was a thriller.

The only update to the Honours board was from H.Sharma who opened the batting for the Strikers in their T20 match and scored an unbeaten 50.

A reminder to all players, supporters and administrators that there will be no club or youth cricket on February 20 due to this being the first day of the Black Caps v Australia test match at Hagley Oval.

Premier Men, Senior A, 2A and 2B will complete a double header on 13/14 February in lieu of not playing on the 20th.

Special President’s Grade representative match on Monday 8th of February

The Presidents Grade has a North v South representative grade whereby each team nominates 2 players for selection. This is the second year of this fixture and this year it will he held at Burnside Park, starting at 12pm.

There is a lot of pride at stake in these fixtures, and I am told the Bar will be open if you wish to pop down and support the North Team featuring the Martin Conway, Dave Robertson, Gareth Gibson and Peter McInnes from BWCUCC – so worth a look.

Final Note

The club’s committee meeting was moved to Tuesday the 9th of February, so plenty of time to email in anything for the committee.

Newsletter 13, 2015/2016

What a week of wet weather it has been, pretty much a wash out for the National Police Tournament that was being hosted at Burnside Park, with a lot of time and effort going to organising this from David Robertson.

The grounds are still very wet and Christchurch Metro Cricket have doing ground inspections yesterday and today, so keep a look out on their website or facebook for any cancellations.

A dissappointed Premier Team leave the field after their last over loss against St. Albans

The Premier Men really did the club proud in getting into close positions and ended 3rd on the table in the 20/20 competition, tied with 2 other teams on 18. With only the top 2 sides going through to the final it was a must win match against St. Albans in the last match of the day, but we couldn’t quick get across the line with 12 needed off the final over.  Well batted to Sam Noster 48 off 28 balls and Micah Campbell 25. It was a sad end to a day that saw the team defend 90 against Sydenham who were all out for 70 in the morning fixture.

Jared Croft for Presidents Foxes earns his spot on the honours board with 60 against St. Albans, and Brad Reid in the Ghetto Hustlers monstered 58 against Southern Districts in their encounter. Please let me know if there any other additions to the Honours board that can be viewed here: Honours Board

Last week the talk from the Ground staff was about a lack of water – the need to get the timer on the irrigation sorted…. not so much this week as the weather has played havoc with the some of the representative cricket that is in Christchurch, including the U15 tournament at Burnside Oval.

It was great to see Tom Latham get his first 100 for the Blackcaps on New Zealand soil and I am sure we are all very pleased for him.

Here is the draw for this weekend Draw for 19th December

This is the last newsletter before the holidays so have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, enjoy plenty of cricket over the break.

Mike Dunlop reports in “BWU 9 team talk. A great team win today posting 207/5. Solid batting partnerships meant players scored well with Eliza 23 retired, Abby 24 retired and Molly 46 not out, with partner support from Beth and Zoe. Fielding was fantastic as the girls restricted Sydenham to 157/5. Wickets to Beth 3/27 of 4 and Molly 2/16 of 4. Congrats to Angus and Dawn as coaches as the girls look and play like professionals.”

“BWU  year 6 Team 4 played the unbeaten top of the table OBC team 14. BWU4 held a slight run advantage after each teams first 15 overs,  Burnside being 67/4 versus OBC at 60/2.  OBC batted very well in their second inning to score 107/2 leaving Burnside needing 101 runs to win from  15 overs against the divisions leading bowling attack.  Burnside made steady progress from its first 10 over scoring 53 runs for the loss of 3 wickets with solid contributions from Aakrista Dahal 38 & Nick Smith 28. Needing 47 from the last 5 overs Josh Kenny the star of Burnsides batting effort stepped up scoring 33 off from his final 12 balls to take his total score to 60 and see Burnside home with an over and 2 wickets to spare.”

I would like to congratulate the following girls from our BWU9 team who made the South Island Primary schools tournament. Premier Men grab a fantastic win over Sydenham this week with Sam Noster getting 65 with the bat, involved in two run outs and catch – as BWC manage to get 4 run outs, two of which were in the last over to get Sydenham all out needing 3 to win! Sharp fielding and fitness there! Sam Noster, Premier Skipper.
2a’s lose a close encouter with Sydenham in the last over, and 3a Cannon’s have a good win in a high scoring affair seeing Keiran “Footie” Foote smashing 70* off 54 and 4/32 off 6.3 overs and a catch so that has to be…allrounder of the day.
