LAST WEEKEND OF JUNIOR CRICKET FOR THE YEAR
This weekend sees the last round of Friday night and Saturday morning Junior Cricket for 2014. We hope you enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable break until Junior Cricket resumes on 7 and 8 February 2014. If the long break from now until then causes you to forget this, all you have to remember is to have a look at the calendar on the Links page of the club website.

HONOURS BOARD FOR FOUR JUNIORS AND SIX SENIORS
Ten players grace the Honours Board this week – check out their achievements here.

PREMIERS END UP 8TH IN ONE DAY COMPETITION; TOP WIN FOR 2As
Defending 211, our Premiers went down in a dramatic finish to Marist Harewood on the last ball of the 50th over and with only one wickret to get, and therefore finished in 8th place in the competition. This despite the best efforts of Mike Allcock and skipper Matt Farrant (see Honours Board)

Premier Captain Matt Farrant on the way to his five wickets

There are lots more photos of Saturday’s Senior Cricket from Burnside Oval on the Club’s Facebook page.

However, the 2As had a strong three wicket victory, chasing down 190. This was a great start to their two day competition. The successful chase was largely due to Matt Jefferd, who was unlucky not to score his maiden century, smoking a drive to mid-off when on 96. Earlier, Damian Corbett had taken 5/65.

There was also a win for the Cannons, but their 3Bs rivals the Brawlers and the Mariners could not replicate that result. David O’Brien scored 66 not out for the Brawlers.

Nor could the Presidents prevail over St Albans, despite 63 from their skipper Dave Robertson.

GOOD WINS FOR BOTH JUNIOR PREMIER TEAMS
Our Junior Premiers had another convincing win, this time against St Andrews. Also, our Year 7 Premiers, after several close calls, notched up their first win of the season aganist Sumner. Read about both victories in the Match Reports section of the club website.

This Sunday we host the Premier, 2A, 2B and Senior A one day finals at Burnside Oval. After you’ve done the Christmas shopping, call into the pavilion for a drink and a chance to watch the best one day teams in action.

Without our sponsors, this club could not function. So, we are very grateful for their generosity, and this week we highlight two sponsors who we encourage you to support:

Martyns and Mowers who assist in looking after our grounds gear but are also regular supporters of events such as golf day

and

White and Taylor Plumbers who are also suppliers to, and ongoing supporters of, the club.

SUCCESSFUL CLUB DAY; JUNIOR PREMIERS KEEP ON WINNING
It was great to see so many BWU Junior players on Burnside Oval during Saturday’s Junior Club day, and then to have so many players and families up in the clubrooms afterwards.

In the afternoon, the Junior Premiers continued on their winning way against Sydenham. Read about their match here, and also how the Year 7 Premiers and the Year Six team fared. Also, Peter Hay reflects on the contribution of the Year 8 players to the club, and acknowledges a representative achievement by Matthias Paltridge.

HONOURS BOARD FOR FOUR JUNIORS AND ONE SENIOR PREMIER

Tim Southee with the honours board2

No, Tim Southee’s not on our Honours Board (that’s the one at Lord’s) but on the BWU Honours Board there is now a second female player, only a week after our first. This time it was Eliza McIntosh with her 3/24 against OBC. Find out who the others on the Board are on this page.

PREMIERS MISS OUT ON ONE DAY COMPETITION SEMI-FINAL
To make the one day competition semi-finals, our Premiers needed LPW to beat OBC on Saturday, and to beat East-Shirley themselves. LPW did their bit for us, but unfortunately our boys went down by two wickets and therefore will not be semi-finalists. They play off for 7th or 8th place this week.

Our 2A’s two day match against OBC is evenly poised but all other teams except the 3B Cannons did not have a happy day. The Cannons beat East Shirley by four wickets and are now a clear first on the points table.

LOUIE CHAPMAN PLAYER OF TOURNAMENT AT NATIONAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS
Heaton Intermediate last week were in Palmerston North competing in the national Primary Schools tournament – the ‘Active Post Cup’. BWU had three players involved – Louie Chapman, Dominic Cornish and Cullen Moody. The team went very well but lost one game and ended up coming second on countback by 0.06 runs after 3 teams ended with one loss each! The boys were gutted as you can imagine. Well done to Louie who was player of the tournament – a great achievement. Congratulations, too, to Brendon Donkers, our BWU Premier coach, who also oversees the Heaton teams.

COMING UP THIS WEEKEND – SENIOR CRICKET
The Senior draw this weekend is:

Premiers v Marist-Harewood, Burnside Oval 1, 10.30am
2As v Old Boys Collegians, Elmwood Park 4, second day of two day match, 10:30am
2Bs v Heathcote, default win to Heathcote
3B Brawlers v Sydenham All-Stars, Burnside Oval 3, 1:00pm
3B Cannons v OBC SCG, Burnside Oval 4, 1.00pm
3B Mariners v East Shirley, Burnside Oval 2, 1.00pm
Presidents Foxes v St Albans, Hospital Corner 1, 1.00pm

COMING UP THIS WEEKEND – JUNIOR CRICKET
The Junior draw this weekend is:

Year 8/7 Premier: BWU1 v St Andrews College 1, Ilam Fields 1, 12.30pm
Year 7 Premier: BWU3 v Sumner Straits 1, Burnside Oval 6, 9:00am
Year 6 Section 1: BWU4 v Sumner 2 Smashers, Sumner School 1a, 9:00am

Year 5 Super 8 Section 2: BWU7 v OBC24, Fendalton School 1a, 9:00am

DID YOU KNOW?
….., continuing our West Indies theme, that a BWU player holds a share of the highest partnership in tests against the West Indies? Terry Jarvis, who played for our Premiers from to, scored 182 and put on 387 with Glenn Turner (259) against the West Indies in Georgetown, Guyana in 1972. This is still the fourth highest partnership for the first wicket in tests and the eighteenth highest for all wickets in test history.

DID YOU KNOW?
….with the test against West Indies starting in Dunedin next Tuesday, about the big win that NZ had there in 1980? Against by far the strongest team in world cricket, NZ had a very exciting one wicket win. Here is the scoreboard – you can see that the last two batsman, Gary Troup and Stephen Boock, had to scramble four runs to win, amidst much excitement. The test was also full of controversy, mainly about the unpiring. This included Michael Holding kicking down the stumps in response to one decision. Trimbles will be pleased that there is limited Youtube footage of this test, but there is some of Holding’s protest.

After a break for Show Weekend, Friday night Junior Cricket resumes at 6pm tonight.

HONOURS BOARD FOR TOM DUNLOP, RYAN JAMES, MATTHIAS PALTRIDGE, NICHOLAS PRICE, MATT FARRANT, SAM NOSTER AND DAVID ROBERTSON
Four Junior players and three Senior players made the Honours Board this week and you can see why here.

PREMIER T20 TOURNAMENT WASHUP; JUNIOR PREMIERS CARRY ON THEIR WINNING WAY
Sydenham won the Premier T20 competition that we hosted over the weekend, so congratulations to them. Our Premiers had one win over Old Boys Collegians and two losses to Lancaster Park Woolston and Marist-Harewood and therefore did not progress past the group stage. There were two standout BWU batting performances over the weekend – Matt Farrant’s 74* against LPW and Sam Noster’s 87 v OBC. The latter innings won Sam the prize for the highest overall individual score of the tournament.

IMG_0143
An outfield catch for the Premiers’ Jarred Cunningham against OBC

Thanks to all those who played in the senior morning grades over the weekend – it is a difficult period to get players, so your support is much appreciated.

The standout performance of the senior morning grades (there were no afternoon matches) was from Presidents Foxes Skipper David Robertson, playing for the 2Bs, who took 5/18. Unfortunately the team went down by 1 wicket and have just missed a place, on points differential, in the one day competition semi-finals this weekend.

Despite a makeshift 2A side losing to Marist-Harewood, they are playing in their one day semi-final this weekend.

IMG_0051
Celebrations for the 2As after a wicket.

You can see more Premier and 2A photos from the weekend here on the Club’s Facebook page.

The Junior Premiers, easily our winningest club team over the past few seasons, had another crushing win, this time over Medbury. Read the match report on this page, where you can also see the Year 7 Premier report.

8 JUNIORS MAKE CHRISTCHURCH REP SIDES
Hats off to Louie Chapman, Mathew Bond and Dominic Cornish whose team went through unbeaten to win the CJCA tournament over the past three Sundays. All played well again with Dominic getting the high score of this weekend – 47. In the other game Matthias Paltridge (at the helm again) lead his team to victory with the game’s high score of 24.

A big congratulations to eight Junior players who have just made Christchurch representative sides.

Junior Premiers Mitchell Hay, Louie Chapman, Cullen Moody, Ryan James, Tom Dunlop, Dominic Cornish and Josh Paul have made the two Christchurch Metro sides to play in the South Island Primary Schools tournament in Gore in January. Very well done boys.

Riley Hunter has been selected for the Year 6 Christchurch Blue team to play South Canterbury in December. Riley also won an award for sportsmanship at the Year 6 tournament played over the past three weekends. Congratulations on both counts Riley.

COMING UP THIS WEEKEND – SENIOR CRICKET
Our Premier team resumes its one day competition this weekend, with still a mathematical chance of making the semi-finals.

The Senior draw is:

WINS AGAIN FOR MOST TEAMS
Again it was a winning weekend for all teams except one (this time the 2Bs). The Premiers beat OBC by 52 runs and are still in with a chance of a semi-finals spot. The 2As (160/9) had another nerve-wracking win, by one wicket over Sydenham (156). Man of the match was Adam Gillett (44* and 2 wickets), particularly for lifting the chase out of the mire (35/5 at one stage) and for being there at the end. The 2Bs came second in a low scoring encounter with Sydenham (97 v 56). There were comfortable wins to the 3B Brawlers (105/6) over Sumner (77), and the 3B Cannons (102/4) over Sydenham Goats (98/6). The 3B Mariners had a bye. The Presidents Foxes, with Jeff Roy (69) starring with the bat and worrying the neighbours’ roof from the middle of no.4. The Junior Premiers had a massive win over (220 v 50) over Halswell. Read the match report here and also the reports for the Year 7 Junior Premiers, and junior team BWU4.

JUNIORS DO WELL AGAIN AT CJCA TOURNAMENT
Sunday was another day where a number of the BWU Juniors did very well at the CJCA zones tournament. Dominic Cornish scored 30 runs to help his team over the line chasing 129 to win. He then backed this up with 2/11, supported by Louie Chapman bowling 5 overs for 6 runs. In the other game Tom Dunlop and Ryan James opened the batting and put on an excellent partnership with Tom finishing on 54 and Ryan retired on 46. However they were not supported by their team mates and their final score of 137 was not enough. Mitchell Hay in the other team chimed in at the end with a quick fire 22 to knock off the winning runs.

FEATURED SPONSORS
This week we have two featured sponsors, for whose support the club is very grateful.  Fox and Associates is the naming rights sponsor of the Presidents Foxes,  and is the firm of long-term club player David Fox, who was himself in the Presidents team over three decades. North West Dental is part-owned by Chris Kennedy, club stalwart and current Fox; Chris and his business partner Steve Simmons are long-term supporters of initiatives such as the club golf day.

SCOTT INGLIS
To mark Scott’s milestone of becoming the club’s most capped Premier player ever, there was a celebration in the clubrooms after the match on Saturday. There are a few photos on the club’s Facebook page here and here. In the photo below, Scott and a club Life Member compare career statistics:

HONOURS BOARD FOR LOUIE CHAPMAN, JOSH PAUL, JONTY HUNTER, MATT FARRANT and MICHAEL AITKEN
Players from the Premiers (well batted Matt Farrant), 3B Brawlers, Junior Premiers and Year 7 Premiers made the honours board this week. You can find out here what they achieved.

WINS FOR MOST TEAMS
A repeat of last week, with the Premiers being beaten, by St Albans and then Canterbury Under 20, but everyone else coming up trumps. The 2As were in strife chasing St Albans’ 226 but another rearguard fightback saw them through by two wickets. The 2Bs (112/5 v 111) also prevailed over St Albans. The 3B Mariners (110/6, Sean Armstrong 40) beat Marist-Harewood Green (100/7). The 3B Brawlers didn’t lose a wicket in beating Merivale-Papanui as Raj Arora and Michael Aitken combined for an unbeaten 94 run opening partnership. The 3B Cannons (70/1) breezed past Heathcote (67/9). In a replay of last years final, the Presidents Foxes (108/4) conquered Merivale-Papanui (105).

Some photos of Saturdays’s Premier Cricket, including a sequence of Mike Allcock sweeping a six, are on club’s Facebook page.

The Junior Premiers had another win, this time over East Shirley, as Peter Hay recounts here. You can also read about how the Year 7 Premiers weren’t as successful against Medbury.

JUNIORS DO WELL AT CJCA TOURNAMENT
Peter Hay reports that Sunday was the start of the year 6, 7 and 8 CJCA regional tournament. All of the BWU Year 8 Premier side that trialled (9) ended up in Development teams. A number of our boys did very well. Mitchell Cullen shared an unbroken 88 run partnership, Mitchell finishing on 47* and Cullen 48* to ensure a win for their side. Cullen also took 3/17. The other Year 8 Development game was low scoring with Dominic’s, Matthew’s and Louie’s team defending a modest score of 83 runs. Louie finished with 3/2 (6 overs), Matthew 0/3 (4 overs); Dominic 1/6 (6 overs). Earlier Ryan James finished with the excellent figures of 1/2 (off 5), Tom 1/5 (off 4) and Matthias 1/8 (off 3).

SCOTT INGLIS BECOMES MOST CAPPED PREMIER PLAYER
This Saturday, Scott Inglis becomes the most capped Premier player in the 108 year history of our club. Scott will play his 225th match this weekend, overtaking Russell Haglund. There will be a brief ceremony in the clubrooms after the match to celebrate this remarkable achievement, and everyone is warmly invited. Congratulations Scott.

THE UNLUCKIEST MAN IN CHRISTCHURCH
Normally we don’t mind, and even actively encourage, the misfortunes of opposition players. However, on Saturday we felt nothing but sympathy for a Lancaster Park Woolston opponent. Keen to go surfing, he was talked into playing to make up the numbers. In a team soundly beaten, he was run out for a duck and dropped a catch. No doubt he was happy to leave at the end, until he found that a tree had been blown onto and through his car. Not a good day. Hopefully his Lotto numbers come in this Saturday.

HONOURS BOARD PERFORMANCES FROM PREMIERS, 2As, 2Bs, CANNONS, BRAWLERS, PRESIDENTS, JUNIOR PREMIERS AND YEAR 7 PREMIERS
Lots of Junior and Senior Honours Board performances last weekend, with the highlight being captain Callum George’s 115* for the Brawlers. Have a look here to see who made the Board.

Unfortunately our Premiers (167/8) were beaten by LPW (170/4). However, all the other Senior teams had good wins. The 2As, after being about 40/5, fought back via Mike Allcock, Hugo Snape and Brett Thomson to score 211/8 and beat LPW by two wickets. The 2Bs (66/2) had a resounding win over LPW (65). The Brawlers (255/4) cruised past East Shirley (167). The Cannons (73/4) did the same to LPW (72). The Mariners (46/2) also won easily over Sydenham Goats (45). The Presidents Foxes (124/4) had a strong win over the OBC/LPW Buccaneers (122).

DID YOU KNOW?
A few weeks ago we foreshadowed leggie Ish Sodhi’s test debut. This week we have commiserated with an unlucky visitor to Burnside Oval. Let’s combine the two themes and ask did you know about the unlucky story of Black Caps legspinner Greg Loveridge?. Read the really interesting tale here about how, on his test debut, he broke his finger before he could bowl a ball, why he never played for his country again, and what happened next.

Have a great cricketing weekend.
