Junior Cricket Underway

After a very wet Thursday and cold Friday CJCA made the correct decision to wait and see what Saturday would bring. It was the right call and junior cricket got underway across the city.

Plenty of excited young cricketers would be waking up and pulling back the curtains to sunlight and no rain. They would be joined by equally excited and nervous parents, especially those parents who had offered to help by volunteering to manage or coach a side with no experience with no previous cricket experience.

A massive thank you to all our volunteers we could not run junior cricket without you.

The club had ran short of caps for the start of the season – but we have now managed to get a top up of supply and we will make sure that all our Juniors have caps for their next match. This was due in part to the Our Lady of Victories school joining the club with two sides and a team of new to cricket Year 6s. Our two new Year 6 teams played each other at Merrin School. The first week of practice was disrupted by weather though teams still managed to meet in the pavilion. Some innovation saw a ‘cricket on knees’ match.

A quick visit around some of our local schools who have artificial pitches and it was wonderful to have access again to Te Parito Kōwhai Russley School where our Year 6 Hardball team has their first match.

This season we are grateful to have the support of Village Bakehouse Ilam who are providing our player of the days with a hot chocolate – we had some fantastic efforts – but in particular well done to Evan who took a Hat-trick in his first ever match!
