The club has been discussing renovating the clubrooms for some considerable time, and since the Canterbury EQs the committee is aware that we also need to the take the opportunity to undertake necessary strengthening to the building. Given that these structural works needs to be undertaken, it has also held up other work as the committee wished to undertake, but we don’t want these costs to be wasted.

Discussion with FC Twenty11

We have been in discussion with FC Twenty11 about the our preliminary plans as they still have a part ownership of the pavilion, as do the council. This dates back to when there was a single changing rooms at the park. This is a 1/3 share of the area marked ‘GB’ in the survey.

Project Team and Time Line

The project team includes Lachlan Munro – Architect, Mike Wheeler – Project Manager, and Brett Gilmore – Engineer and there is subcommittee of members who are working on this project. The stages are as follows:

  • Preliminary Design meetings held with Architect / Engineer
  • Preliminary design issued for consultation / feedback to stakeholders and members (May 2024)
  • Developed design and costings with a budget to be undertaken. At this stage we may go through the building consent process to identify further requirements to bring the building up to standard.
  • Fundraising to get underway and depending on how successful this is then tendering and scheduling can be undertaken.

Design Notes and Plans

This high-level design proposal aims to enhance the existing cricket pavilion while prioritising affordability and minimal disruption to the current structure. Our focus is on creating a more welcoming environment for guests and parents, improving player facilities, and enhancing the functionality of the lounge area.

On the ground floor, we’ve created four spacious changing rooms, each equipped with their own shower and toilet facilities. Additionally, we’ve included an umpire’s changing room, which also serves as an accessible WC and shower, along with a designated cleaners’ cupboard. These rooms are conveniently linked to the sports field and the main entrance via a central corridor.

Currently the ground floor changing rooms space is only 55% of the area, the rest being dedicated to storage. In order to create the increased number of changing rooms and facilities we will be asking the council for a dedicated storage building shared with the football club. (The size of the shed is to be confirmed and not to scale on the plans)

Upstairs, we’ve expanded the bar area to accommodate a larger, light-commercial kitchen with added storage space behind the bar. The existing toilets have been replaced with individual unisex facilities alongside a dedicated cleaner’s cupboard. A standout feature is the inclusion of a prominent pop-out window, intended to showcase the club’s trophies, history, and memorabilia. Sliding doors lead out to the deck, while a spacious wall area is designated for a TV and discreet AV cupboard, ensuring a streamlined appearance.

To address the pavilion’s currently unwelcoming entrance, we’ve relocated the deck stairs to enhance visibility from the car park, making it more inviting for parents and visitors. By shifting the scorer’s box to the eastern side, we not only open up this space but also strategically position it to block the southerly winds and improve connectivity to the bar area.

Finally, timber columns will be installed along the path at the main entrance, each one symbolising club members who have represented New Zealand. These columns serve as a proud testament to the club’s heritage and achievements, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among visitors and players.
