Are you a university student studying in Christchurch, and looking for your cricket fix? Burnside Oval became the home of university cricketers in Canterbury when the West Christchurch University Club was part of another merger with the Burnside Cricket Club in 1972.
If you want to play competitive Premier Grade cricket we encourage you to stay for the summer, however if you are just here and would like to a match we will try and accommodate you into one of our sides.
When Canterbury University Cricket Club merged with the West Christchurch Cricket Club in 1957, the combined organisation became the club of choice for University players wanting to further their cricket careers. Burnside Oval became the home of University cricketers when the West Christchurch University Club was part of another merger with the Burnside Cricket Club in 1972.
This 55 year tradition, with University students joining the club in numbers each year, and adding considerable benefit to the club both on and off the field, continues to this day. In February 2017 a Canterbury Universities combined side travelled to Wellington to play Victoria University Cricket Club in a T20 Tournament for the ‘Neil Wood Memorial Trophy’ this was match was first played in 1907, this is hoped to be a regular feature of competative cricket.
