2017/18 Season Newsletter #11 – One Day CHAMPIONS!!!

Welcome to our weekly newsletter where you can find all the latest club news including match reports, draws, and the weekly Al Brown MVP update…  This is the first newsletter of 2018. We review the Premiers One Day final victory, and preview the second half of the summer. Details below…

One Day Champs!

They did it! Congratulations to the Premiers for their fantastic all round team performance in the Premier Mens one day final. It has been a “long time between drinks” after waiting more than 20 years since our last Christchurch metro premier competition win.  Our boys posted 234 in stifling Christchurch heat, thanks to a handy 62 from opener Tinus Huyser, before we dismissed Old Boys for 213 with 10 overs to spare at Elmwood Park. Old Boys were on track to knock off the total at 118-4 before star bowler Jackson Latham stole the show, taking 5-36 to rip the OBC lower order apart.

JJ Naude stands and delivers.

Mens teams starting back this weekend

Check out the draw on CricHQ – all mens grades morning and afternoon are back into it this weekend. With a lot of rain about through the week also keep an eye out for grounds changes. All draws for senior and junior teams are available online in the Burnside West Christchurch upcoming fixtures page on CricHQ.

A note on membership subs

Our club is lucky to have some of the finest grounds, facilities and coaching in the Canterbury region. Our park, the immaculate outlook from the Pavilion and the quality pitches we get to play on is something that all club members collectively benefit from. But these facilities do not come for free. As a club we are dependent on players and teams doing their part by paying your annual subscriptions. Subs for the 2017/2018 season are now well overdue.

If you have not yet paid your membership for this season, or made suitable arrangements with the club, you are now in breach of your membership. For those players in morning grades failure to pay your sub or make arrangements will now affect your eligibility for selection. For afternoon grade teams, failure to pay your team sub in full or to make other arrangements immediately could affect your team’s ongoing registration status until resolved, including de-registration of your team from the competition. If you have questions, talk to a member of the BWCUCC committee.

Junior cricket

Junior cricket is still a few weeks away – resumption dates. Note a change in the resumption date for Friday Night cricket to what was previously communicated.

  • Junior Friday Night cricket first day back on Friday 9th February, 2018
  • Junior Saturday Morning grades first day back on Saturday 3rd February, 2018

Playing on the home grounds this weekend…

Keep an eye out  on Saturday for…

  • BWU Premiers hosting St. Albans on Burnside Park 1
  • BWU 2A hosting Sydenham 2A on Burnside Park 4
  • BWU 2B hosting Sydenham 2C on Burnside Park 2
  • BWU Cannons hosting Sumner Burnside Park 3

Senior and Junior Player of the Day Awards

Reminder – all teams that return to the pavilion (both Junior and Senior teams) are eligible to nominate a player of the day award.

Our club sponsors at One Good Horse Restaurant and The Avonhead Tavern have kindly provided the club with these Player of the Days awards. It is fantastic to have great supporters of club cricket and being local we hope you take up the opportunity to spend some time at the club house as well as making use of the prizes.

Burnside Merchandise

We are delighted to advise that official Burnside Merchandise is now available to purchase online direct from our sponsor Cricket Express. The team at Cricket Express have updated their website, and you can now order Burnside training gear and clothing online and just in time for Christmas! More items will be added after Christmas, but for now, check out the selection and show your club pride with some awesome BWCUCC kit!

Al Brown MVP Leaderboard

The top 5 has well and truly converged now, with Jackson Latham’s 5-for in the One Day final helping him to pull well clear in 5th spot, and now only 4.2 points separate the top 5.

You get points for runs, wickets, maidens, catches, stumpings, run outs etc. The more detail you capture in your scorecards, the more points you stand to gain – especially remember to record your catches, and try to convince your opponents to fully utilize CricHQ too…
