The shield was first presented for the 1905/06 season, the first year of the club & district cricket, the club was last awarded this over 40 years ago.
1905/06 season—the club’s very first season after being established—was Johnny Lawrence.
When the West Christchurch Cricket Club was formed on August 31, 1905, Johnny Lawrence was appointed as the inaugural First Grade captain. He was an experienced figure in Canterbury cricket, having been a member of the first-ever New Zealand team that played against New South Wales in 1893.
Under his leadership, the senior side was immediately successful, winning their grade in that debut season. While Lawrence led the top-tier side, the club had other captains for its lower grades and Second Grade Captain C.S. Young led the team to a grade win.
