Newsletter 8, 2015/2016

Are we all ready to see Pink Ball day / night test cricket, not sure what everyone’s thoughts are on this change butlet’s get behind the Black Caps this weekend!

Just are reminder to make sure you have got plenty of sunscreen and if you have forgotten to bring some just ask and it will be happily shared around.

Coco-Cola Christmas in the Park is happening this Saturday night where you will able to see Nyree Huyser starring in the show….Nyree is married to Premier player Carl and we wish her all the best for this years performance –  Further information is available here

Junior Cricket

Well done to Joey Hull opening the batting for BWU9 against St. Albans managed to get 30* retired in just 29 balls opening the batting – in fact the top four batsmen for the team all retired against a good St. Albans attack, unfortunately 154/3 wasn’t enought to stop St. Albans who got the target 5 down.

BWU2 had a really good win over St. Andrews with Samual Lawry 4/3 off 4 overs and Oliver Smith 3/10 off 4 overs restricting St. Andrews. Great Bowling spell there guys!

Keep posting those awesome pictures up on the club facebook page as well!

Senior Cricket

A wicked spell of bowling from Matt Farrant and Anthony How had the Premier Team restrict St. Albans to 182 (a good recovery from 113/8 so credit St. Alban’s there). The target that looked achievable at 108/3 saw the wheels fall off and being all out for 153.

The performance of the weekend goes to David O’Brien who got 6/14 off 6 overs as Brawlers continue their winning ways.

President’s Grade had a bye, but the Grade day hosted at St. Albans was a great success with two the President’s sides getting to play on Hagley Oval which will have several club fixtures a season on it. A real treat as Mark Harding would say.

Carl Huyser

Carl Huyser, Premier Men opening batsman who will need another 100 to beat his wife Nyree’s performance on Saturday.

Honours Board and Al Brown MVP

Did we mention David O’Brien get 6 wickets, this takes him to top of the points table, pushing Blake into second and Matt Farrant whose 4 wicket hall take to third. Deon did everyone a favour in getting a duck.

The honours board has been update with all the performances that were on Cricket HQ, if you know if any others just email them in!

Enjoy your cricket and have a great weekend!

Newsletter 7, 2015/2016

What a weeks it has been with passing of Jonah Lomu and the tragic events in Paris – which seem such a world away from our cricket ground in Christchurch – however when you hear from people in our cricket community who have family or friends in France our thoughts go out them this week.

Junior Cricket

We look forward to seeing all the Friday night cricketers getting back into action this week, let’s try and stay warm and hope there is no rain!

Well done to Noah James from BWU2 for earning his place on the Honours Board with 43 last Saturday, but the highlight of the weekend goes to BWU3 for picking up the ‘Peter Burke Shield’ with a nail biting 1 wicket win against Marist Harewood.  Sam Forster 35 and Easton Stock 30 had a matching winning partnership for the 7th wicket helping get the team home with 1.2 overs to spare. BWU3 celebrate with the Peter Burke Shield.

Blake Coburn

Congratulations to Blake Coburn from our Premier team on being selected for Canterbury A. A couple of other players in the team came close and have certainly been training hard, I am sure their time will come. Blake is also now top of the Al Brown MVP club competition after an 83 run 10th wicket partnership with Scott Inglis who came together with the score at 58/9 to make East Shirley wait for their win.

This week our both Premier Men and 2a’s are at home at Burnside Park so please come down and support them as they face Saint Albans in the One Day competition.

Afternoon grade cricket is back on and President’s will be having their Grade day at Hospital Corner with two lucky teams having the privilege of playing on Hagley Oval. Hopefully they bring the boundaries in a bit closer, as their arms are not what they used to be as this great article discusses.

Cricinfo – Got a good arm? Enjoy it while it lasts

Note from the Committee

The Club committee is currently looking at ways to increase the Club’s revenue so that we can improve our facilities and strengthen the financial position of the Club, without increasing our subs.  As part of the process, the Club committee intends to establish a revenue subcommittee, to brainstorm ways of increasing the Clubs revenue and ultimately to implement those ideas.  We are looking for volunteers who are able to assist us with this and sit on that subcommittee.  Whether you are a current senior player, a parent of a junior player or one of the Club’s alumni, we would love to have you assistance.  Please send expressions of interest to burnside.cricket@gmail.com.  No specific experience is necessary (but if you have it, it is welcomed) just a willingness to commit some time to helping the Club.

Honours Board and Al Brown MVP

The honours board has been updated from last weekend, and also a number of 2a players have been added for the last two week include Mike Allcock 65 and Ben Henderson who in his first match for the club scored a well compiled 50 in his first dig for 4 years.

Al Brown sees Blake Coburn race to the top, with the following places unchanged from last weeks non-afternoon cricket matches and Matt Farrant pushing his way into 5th. With Blake on Canterbury A duty the top spot is up for grabs.

A special mention

Peter McInnes

Congratulation to Peter McInnes who was the ‘Volunteer Coach of the Year’ for New Zealand winner the New Zealand Netball awards in Auckland. Well deserved and thanks for being such a great volunteer! Peter and Kat McInnes

cricket live day nov 7

Thank you for all the help and support, the weather turned it on and there was plenty of really positive feedback from everyone involved who made it happen. It is great to know that as a cricket community we are able to really help out a great cause.

Junior Cricket

The Honours Board has been updated for BWU2 Jamie Hays 44 retired vs Sydenham, and Joey Hull from BWU9, 31* as well an excellent bowling performance from Tom Giddens with 4/9 – awesome figures! Thanks for all of the great photos coming in – please keep sharing on Facebook they look just great, check this awesome selfie from BWU5 – that will hard to beat!

Senior Cricket

It’s a bit of a shame we couldn’t celebrate the first Ton of the season from the club with a win – Premier Men’s batsman Carl Huyser scored 108 on Saturday vs OBC, he did manage to celebrate with his cousin Deon Cremer who has been consistantly at the top of the Al Brown MVP points awards. Deon Cremer on the Left, and centurion Carl Huyser.

Carl Huyser and Deon

David O’Brien also had a stunning weekend in the Brawlers match against OBC, with bowling figures of 5/25 and scoring 75* to take over the lead from his team mate Deon in Al Brown MVP. The Brawlers continue their winning ways, joined with 2a’s who had two good wins under leadership of Matt Janett on the Saturday and Jordan Buchanan on the Sunday.

The Rolling Stones look like they also had their first win of the season, however the President’s went down in their top of the table clash against Merivale Papanui. If you have any special performances post up some pics on the clubs facebook page.

Honorary Members Luncheon

We invited our Honorary Members for a luncheon on Saturday and it was great to see many of them come and enjoy some time in the club. Many of these members also helped to develop our club at Burnside Park from 1 pitch and a shed in 1972 and they are still prepared to go the extra distance and support the club today. Special thanks to Peter Burke who arranged lunch.

The new iniative of becoming involved in the ‘Jack Kerr Pride’ is another level of Honorary membership that allows extras funds to be put aside and spent for the benefit of the club. Honorary Membership is $30.00 per annum and ‘Jack Kerr Pride’ is $100.00 which includes the honorary membership – click here for honorary membership

You can read more about Jack Kerr here at wikipedia

Honours Board and Al Brown

The Honour’s Board has been update as of today, if there are any performances not on the board please email as these are only being picked up on the results in CricHQ.

After some quick calulations we find that David O’Brien’s performance has taken him to the top of Al Brown MVP with 96.08 with Blake Coburn closely following on 93.97…some other points scorer’s might be joining them once Arun returns from Holiday.

Junior Cricket

What a busy it is for parents with Halloween, Guy Fawkes and All Black win’s but through all this they still manage to get all the budding cricketers to their practises and matches – a big thanks for all that work!

Last Friday say the Active Post Super Star Academy kit issued to the players in the Super Star Academy 2 group, it was just a treat to see the bats and ball getting put into action straight away!

Saturday Morning Cricket continues this weekend – but due to the 4 x premier cricket matches they will not be played at Burnside Oval – CJCA has tried to make all the junior games as close as possible to the park so that juniors can come to Burnside after their matches. Please email or post on facebook some pictures of these matches!

Active Post Kit

Senior Cricket

Both Premier Team, 2a’s and our 2b team all had loses over the weekend and it wasn’t helped that we didn’t have a full contigent of players available for matches – with many people unavailable due to exams and being away – but it’s back to a full muster this week and let’s support these sides over the weekend.

The President’s Foxes and Cannon’s scrape win’s by 1 wicket with some real quality tail order batting, Brawlers win their top of the table clash with MPCC while the Mariners has a loss in their 3b match. The Dubai Diamond Traders continue their gem of run with another win while the Strikers had a win over the Rolling Stones in the local derby. The Ghetto Hustlers also has pleasing win over St. Albans by 5 wickets.

The big match up of the week sees a top of the table clash of two unbeaten President’s sides as the Foxes take on the MPCC at Hospital Corner.

Ando from Cannons

Paul ‘Ando” Anderson of the Whangaparoa Canno’s Pony Club

Citation reads – “Jellyfish stopped the rot for a time until 2 wickets in 2 overs had us 71/9. Step up Ando. Edge of the seat stuff as he guided the ball to the fence twice, then requiring 5 to win went down town for 6 over long off, earning him back to back 4M Awards”

Al Brown and Honour’s Board

Keep sending in the information for the honours board which still needs to be updated, however with the Al Brown MVP it’s directly from CricHQ – however for some reason the stat’s are split into two seasons for the Premier Mens with the 2-day competition in ‘2015/16’ season and 1 day competition in the ‘2015/16’ season so a bit of adding up sees Blake Coburn make a charge to second on 76.76 points behind Deon Cremer on 82.82

Premier Grade and 2a’s

Labour Weekend’s Saturday and Monday were both cricket days for the Premiers and 2a’s. The Premiers lost the 2 day fixture on Saturday as LPW took the iniative away and built up a quick lead in the morning which put them in winning position. Monday’s 1 day fixture was a loss to Marist Harewood who were able get wickets at the right times to keep ahead of the match, and not even a 61 by Blake Coburn could save the day. 2a’s on the other hand finished with an outright win in the 2 day fixture, and a win in the 1 day match on the Monday. Well done to skipper Steve McKean, let’s hope you have another win over the weekend (and we are not talking about the Wallabies).

Afternoon Grades

A mixed bag of results all round for the afternoon grade seeing the Brawlers going down, who have a top of the table clash on Saturday at Burnside #3. President’s grade player Ben Allan scored 94 – the highest of a club member for the season to date –  before his only mistake, a faint snick to the keeper sent him on his after an impressive partnership with Geoff Boorer 71. Not a bad knock after a 4 year absence from the crease. Geoff Boorer the juggler, next in.

RIP – Eric White

It was with sadness that club members heard on Friday that long-term club member and identity Eric White passed away peacefully at Christchurch Hospital.

Eric was a second grade and Presidents grade stalwart and took approximately 2000 wickets between the early 1970s and the mid-to-late 2000s with his left arm spin and command of line and length.

This Presidents photo was taken in 2007. Eric is in the blue tracksuit.

The club offers its sincerest condolences to Eric’s family.

Eric’s funeral service is to held on Tuesday at 11am at Academy Funeral Home on Main South Road.
